E-commerce – what happened 1. April 2020 in Norway?

From 1. April, the VOEC scheme for foreign online stores and e-marketplaces came into force. Then these shops charges Norwegian VAT (VAT) at the same time as you pay for the item you shop online.

From 1. April, a transitional arrangement with declaration exemption also applies to consignments with a value of less than NOK 350, including shipping and insurance from online stores / e-marketplaces that are not yet VOEC-registered.

The VOEC scheme applies to goods with a value of up to NOK 3,000. Note that you can buy as many items as you want and have these sent to you in the same package as far as each item has a value below NOK 3,000. But you have to pay VAT of 25% for all the goods, including shipping and other costs. On the other hand, the goods you trade within the VOEC scheme do not have customs duties.

The online store or e-marketplace will charge the VAT, just as if you were shopping from a Norwegian online store. This could also lead to your package crossing the border faster and cheaper because the carrier does not have to charge you customs or fees.

See the rules for Norway: Customs and Excise Directorate.

A good strategy for buying products at good prices is to use coupon codes and the discounts that the various suppliers offer, along with free shipping. You will achieve savings compared to the normal price of the product, which is great. If you compare with Norwegian prices for the same prouct, the prices are often much lower abroad.

Best wishes for smart purchases from the administration in ShopAbroad.
